“I think of my paintings to be similar to a movie scene, where there are the main star characters which are given extra attention to detail, in amongst a crew of extras. It's mostly subtle though, so the main characters may change from viewer to viewer. It's quite common for me to recycle similar characters from one scene to the next, as a large portion of them now come from my subconscious memory bank.”
— Tyrone Layne
Tyrone Layne is pleased to present this new body of oil paintings in his signature Peoplescape style.
The composition of his pictures is constructed mainly with people that he considers fictional characters of a universal nature. They are painted in an almost caricature-like way, with a great deal of attention given to the small details included — like being clothed in brand-name garments such as a Gucci shirt, Zimmermann dress, or Nike sneakers, while sipping on a bottle of Fiji water.
His scenes in this latest series capture Sydneysiders performing everyday mundane tasks such as walking the dog, doing exercise, having conversations, drinking takeaway coffees, holding grocery bags, taking photos, or relaxing on one of Sydney's famous beaches. More and more face masks got introduced as Sydney moved into lockdown, and now you don't leave home without one.
Tyrone attempts to bring a sense of humour and light-heartedness to the present time of 2021 as the world and his adopted city of Sydney deals with a life-changing pandemic. Due to Sydney's ongoing lockdown, the decision was made to change from a planned physical exhibition to an online-only presentation.

Sydneysiders: Unscripted ran online throughout September 2021 — a pivot from a planned physical exhibition as Sydney moved into extended COVID lockdown. The fourteen oil paintings pictured above are now in private collections.
